What a strongroom door is
A strongroom door turns an ordinary room into a secure store for cash, records, firearms or stock. The door is a heavy steel leaf hung in a steel frame that is built into the wall. When it is locked, steel bolts shoot from the door edge into the frame on the lock side.
In Zimbabwe these doors are often called "Chubb doors", after the British brand that supplied many of the older doors still in banks and government offices. Shellmate strongroom doors are made by Shellmate, not by Chubb. They do the same job, and we also service and refurbish older Chubb doors (see below).
Shellmate is both a manufacturer and a supplier. We build strongroom doors in our Harare workshop and supply complete door sets with frame, lock and installation, so one company is responsible from quotation to hand-over.
Door grades, plate thickness and sizes
Most strongroom openings in Zimbabwe take a door around 2000 mm high by 1000 mm wide, including the frame. We build doors to other sizes when the opening, the building or the use calls for it. Because we manufacture every door ourselves, we build any plate thickness from 6 mm to 50 mm, and beyond on request.

Locks and options
- Combination locks, so there is no key to lose or copy.
- Key locks, including supply and fitting of N8 locks.
- Dual locks, where two people must be present to open the door.
- An inner security gate so the strongroom can be ventilated while the main door stands open.
- Doors hinged left or right to suit the room.
Archive and record-room doors
Schools, councils, clinics, law firms and registries often need a strongroom for files rather than cash. For these rooms the standard 6 mm grade is usually the right door. Tell us what the room will hold and we will recommend the grade and lock.
Installation and preparing the room
A strongroom is only as strong as the wall the door is set into. Before installation we visit the site, measure the opening and check the walls. Site visits in Harare are free.
- Walls: solid brick or reinforced concrete around the opening. We advise on reinforcement for new builds.
- Frame: anchored into the wall and built in, so the frame cannot be levered out.
- Floor: level and solid enough for the weight of the door set.
- Delivery: we transport the door and frame and install them with our own team, anywhere in Zimbabwe.
Strongrooms and panic rooms
For new strongrooms we work alongside your builder, or design the room for you. Shellmate also designs and builds panic rooms: a reinforced room with a strongroom-grade door that people can lock themselves into.
Refurbishing older strongroom and Chubb doors
Many strongroom doors in Zimbabwe are decades old and still structurally sound. We refurbish them: freeing seized bolt work, replacing worn or lost locks (including fitting new N8 locks), and restoring the finish. It is often far cheaper than replacing the door.
What affects the price of a strongroom door
We do not publish a price list, because two doors that look alike can differ a great deal in cost. Every quotation is written for your opening and your security needs. What changes the price:
- Plate thickness, from 6 mm up to 50 mm.
- Door size, and whether it is a standard 2000 × 1000 mm opening or made to measure.
- Lock type and number of locks.
- Options such as an inner security gate.
- Wall work needed around the opening.
- Delivery distance and installation.

How much does a strongroom door cost in Zimbabwe?

What is the standard size of a strongroom door?

Is a strongroom door the same as a Chubb door?
"Chubb door" is a common name in Zimbabwe for any strongroom door, after the brand behind many older installations. Shellmate doors are our own manufacture. We also service and refurbish genuine Chubb doors.
Can you fit a strongroom door into an existing room?
Yes, provided the walls are solid enough. We check the walls on the site visit and tell you if any reinforcement is needed before the door goes in.
What about the 230 mm door frame prices people search for?
Ordinary 230 mm door frames are building frames for standard doors. A strongroom door comes with its own steel frame made for it, which we supply and install as part of the door set.
